National Provider Identifier (NPI)

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). NPI's will recognize providers and eliminate the need for multiple identifiers when conducting electronic transactions.

Recently we learned that several providers still do not have their NPI on file with MHN. As a reminder, beginning May 23, 2008, providers are required to submit an NPI number with all electronic transactions. Even if you are not submitting electronic claims, having your NPI on file will help us to expedite processing claims. If you are submitting electronic claims and do not provide a valid NPI on the submission, your claims will be returned to provide the required information.

If you are registered user with MHN.com and would like to confirm that we have the correct NPI number on file, or need to add it to your profile, please log in and follow the steps below:

  • Click on My Profile header section
  • Click Update Practice Information
  • Click on Personal Information
  • If the information we have is correct, please click on the No Change Required button
  • If the information needs to be corrected, please click on the Edit button
  • Make necessary changes and click Submit
